ONLY YOU
May 6, 2001
This poem is another of those that came very quickly. A few notes during church service and before lunch was done, this was finished on a napkin. We run into some incredible people in life, but there is only One to worship, to strive to emulate.
Only you can split the sunrise
Only you have paid the toll
Only you can change tomorrow
Only you can make me whole
I see your face in the innocence of children
I see your faith in the hindrance of age
I see your face in the echoes of the laughter
I see your faith in the banishment of rage
Help me remember how the tears fell
Remind me of the gift you gave
Help me remember how the blood flowed
Remind me of the empty grave
Only you can split the sunrise
Only you have paid the toll
Only you can change tomorrow
Only you can make me whole
I thank you for my loved ones
You keep them safe and warm and fed
Thank you for your precious gift
Alive forever, we're never dead
If my work is done tomorrow
The earth won't feel my labored tread
Well done my good and faithful servant
Your body's gone, your spirit lives on
The crown's upon your head
Only you have split the sunrise
Only you have paid the toll
Only you can change tomorrow
Only you can make me whole
