TO START ANEW
June 20, 2013

A new poem written June 15, 2013 and whats crazy about this one is that it isn't written about anyone in particular, but just about the difficulty in changing...the other amazing thing is I wrote it with one scratch out in about 20 minutes...some of the imagery just "popped" in there and although I often go back, weeks, months and even years later to change my poems, this one I like the way it is....I hope you agree.

So you come in here and tell me

that you’re turning over many new leaves

The old you is gone, better is to come

and with baited breath, as a cynic

I wait for you to fail

It isn’t that I’ve heard your story before

you are just one of the many

Its the leaf thats the challenge

the turning thats the issue

Yours is just a cautionary tale

You wish to start anew

The hard times and heartaches are through

What we saw before was another you

That wasn’t true

I was born on a day but it wasn’t yesterday

are you convincing me or convincing yourself

A mid year resolution with determined eyes

a promise surrounded by little white lies

A battered reputation up for sale

The cracks in your makeup start pencil thin

In your foundation just as deep

A made up confession, shared for gold

Just because you win the battle

Doesn’t mean you win the war

You wish to start anew

The hard times and heartaches are through

What we saw before wasn’t you

That wasn’t true

The trail of life winds long and dark

Through sinkhole voids and dynamite

Staying compass straight takes up all your time

But most of the time you’re flying blind

In a hopeless scramble not to fail
